Several years ago, about the middle of April and it is about 25 miles to the island. This year, the March 17th. MODIS pictures show lots of blue water and not much ice on the lake. The island still has plenty of white showing though.

Spring time and the skunk cabbage is getting ready for summer. Although here in Kingsford, winter sent us a little reminder last night. A little bit of snow. Not enough for the plows to come out, not enough for the snowblower but enough for some light shoveling. Or I could wait until this afternoon when it should melt.

Rock of Ages light in the ice. This was from a flight to the island for winter study many years ago. Rolf and Donny flew the Flagship (super cub) out first to make sure the ice in Washington harbor would handle the fully loaded Forest Service's D.H. Beaver. Lately W.S. has been using helicopters instead of the Beavers.

Fall flowers from the island.
